New Free Course Explores Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies for Veterans
Veterans continue to experience disproportionately high rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, and suicide. While many evidence-based treatments have helped countless veterans reclaim their lives, too many continue to struggle despite receiving high-quality care. As research into psychedelic-assisted therapies continues to grow, healthcare professionals, veterans, and families are increasingly asking an important question: What does the science actually tell us?
To help answer that question, Heroic Hearts Project is proud to announce the launch of a new, free online educational course developed in partnership with PsychArmor. This course is designed to provide an accessible, evidence-informed introduction to psychedelic-assisted therapies and their emerging role in veteran mental healthcare.
Building Understanding Through Education
Public interest in psychedelic therapies has grown rapidly over the past several years. Clinical trials investigating psilocybin, MDMA, ketamine, and other psychedelic medicines have generated promising results for conditions such as PTSD, depression, and substance use disorders. At the same time, state-regulated access programs in Oregon and Colorado have created new opportunities—and new questions—for healthcare providers and veterans alike.
Despite this growing interest, many clinicians have received little or no formal education about psychedelic-assisted care during their professional training. Veterans and family members are often left sorting through conflicting information from news stories, social media, and anecdotal reports.
This course was created to help bridge that gap by providing balanced, research-based information that promotes informed decision-making rather than advocacy or hype.
What the Course Covers
The course introduces learners to the current state of psychedelic research while emphasizing the importance of safety, ethical practice, and realistic expectations. Participants will explore topics including:
The science behind psychedelic-assisted therapies
Current research involving veterans and trauma-related conditions
How psychedelic medicines may differ from conventional psychiatric treatments
Safety considerations and participant screening
The critical roles of preparation and post-session integration
The evolving legal and regulatory landscape
Rather than presenting psychedelics as a universal solution, the course encourages thoughtful consideration of both their potential benefits and their limitations. As with any emerging area of healthcare, careful evaluation of the evidence remains essential.
Why Preparation and Integration Matter
One of the distinguishing features of psychedelic-assisted therapy is that the medicine itself represents only one part of the overall therapeutic process.
Research and clinical experience consistently emphasize the importance of careful preparation before a psychedelic experience and structured integration afterward. Preparation helps participants establish realistic expectations, clarify intentions, and develop psychological readiness. Integration focuses on making meaning of the experience and translating insights into lasting behavioral change.
Without these essential components, even meaningful experiences may fail to produce sustained improvements in mental health or wellbeing. The course highlights why these phases are considered foundational elements of responsible psychedelic care.
Supporting Veterans Through Better Information
Veterans often face complex psychological challenges related to military service, including trauma, moral injury, chronic pain, and difficulties transitioning to civilian life. Many have spent years pursuing traditional treatments before exploring alternative approaches.
Providing accurate, balanced education empowers veterans and those who support them to have more informed conversations with healthcare providers and loved ones. Whether someone ultimately decides to pursue psychedelic-assisted therapy or not, understanding the current evidence allows decisions to be made from a foundation of knowledge rather than misinformation.
Healthcare professionals also benefit from developing a working understanding of these therapies. Even clinicians who do not provide psychedelic-assisted treatment are increasingly encountering patients with questions about emerging research or state-regulated programs. Familiarity with the evidence allows providers to offer balanced guidance while supporting patient safety.
